It's been a long time coming, I know. Thanks so much to everyone who waited patiently. But it's back, and it's good. Thumbscrew 1.0b11

It's Universal now. The problems I ran into with running subprocesses using a bundled Python are gone. I reimplemented the thumbnailer kernel using ObjC with the help of Scott Stevenson. Huge thanks, Scott.

It's got Growl support. We'll let you know bit by excruciating bit how Thumbscrew is doing, and when a batch is done.

Web page output is currently suspended while I evaluate the best way to generate output. I've used a variety of means in the past, and want something that is approachable by lots of users. Zope PageTemplates are pretty easy, and the syntax for developing new templates is pretty straightforward. XML and XSLT are maybe a little more universal, but I really don't know.
Take her out for a spin and let me know what you think!
Little confused...MacUpdate shows this as a 629 K download when its actually 3.8 Meg.
Looking forward to testing this baby out.

Unfortunately, I have many Windows clients who use Internet Explorer and png support is non existant.
is there any gif support in the future.
Otherwise, this is a very useful application!
Well done.

Just noticed the comment about PNG's. That won't work for me, hopefully this will JPG the thumb. Sadly, it's a Window$ world.

Just one question -- when I drop a picture on Thumbscrew, it always rotates the picture clockwise. Is there any way to make the rotation counter-clockwise?

Josh: I haven't noticed that. It may be that the value is only getting updated when focus leaves the Max Angle field. I've successfully changed Max Angle between several batches.
Lorne: I haven't noticed that, either. I get randomly clockwise or counterclockwise rotated thumbnails.

Great application! It is currently featured on freemacware.com
This is really handy and adds a cool homey feel to my pictures.
Unfortunately, the photo hosting site, www.flickr.com only maintains transparency in images if the file type is .gif.
If it isn't too much trouble, gif support in a future release would RULE!
Thanks

OK, I guess I didn't run enough images through to see that Thumbscrew randomly angles things around. In the future, would it be possible to add an option to make this deterministic (say, I'd like to "screw" a dozen pictures, all CCW by 30 degrees)?
TIA,
Lorne

And unless you are clever enough to look in the Activity Log, you'll never know where it went... or even if it worked at all, assuming it was small and your computer is fast.
Also, if you paste another image without changing any prefs, the new result will overwrite the older one without any warning or confirmation. Should probably at least ask before overwriting, with an option to overwrite all.
Also, the Activity Log window doesn't update when it is open.

Running 10.4.10
Any ideas? Just ran the update, and the same thing still happens.
Thanks.
